WHAT IS DROP FOOT AND HOW DO YOU GET IT?

Drop foot is a condition in which an individual is unable to lift up the front portion of their foot. In these instances it can drag on the ground, cause a high steppage gait and lead to frequent tripping/falling.


Drop foot occurs due to: neurological conditions, muscular conditions and brain/spinal cord injuries.


Drop foot occurs with nerve injuries which can happen during hip/knee replacement surgeries however can also occur with crossing ones legs too often, prolonged kneeling and wearing a leg cast. Any instances where the peroneal nerve is affected can lead to drop foot.


Drop foot can also occur in muscular conditions including: charcot marie tooth and muscular dystrophy.


Lastly, brain/spinal cord injuries can lead to drop foot - some conditions can include: strokes, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).


Individuals with drop foot may benefit from an ankle foot and orthotic (AFO) brace to help dorsiflex the foot.
