Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a new progressive treatment that is showing promising results and increasing in popularity through the field of Podiatry. PRP is a treatment in which platelets from a patient's blood are placed in a centrifuge and then injected back into a patients own body (only the part that is rich in platelets) to help stimulate healing and natural healing. Platelets are the first responders naturally to soft tissue injury to start the healing and repair process. Additional thrombin and sometimes calcium chloride are added to activate the platelet rich plasma. PRP can even be used to eliminate surgeries in some scenarios. A recent study has shown that PRP has proven to be a more effective treatment in regards to plantar fasciitis than some of the traditional treatments such as a cortisone shot.
