What is a tailors bunion?

A tailor's bunion is a deviation/deformity of your fifth metatarsal in relation to your fifth toe/digit. This will cause an outward projection of the fifth metatarsal head which could lead to irritation, pain and discomfort.

Tailor's bunions are called "tailors bunions" because tailors back in the day would sit all day with their legs crossed on the outside of edge of the foot and it would be constantly rubbed.

What causes tailors bunions?

Tailors bunions are usually caused from increased pronation (overpronation), pressure from tight/narrow footwear or a short fifth metatarsal. These bunions can worsen if placed in narrow/tight footwear and can sometimes get inflamed.

How are these treated?

Tailor's bunions are normally treated conservatively with bunion spacers (joy-a-toes), custom or wider width shoes with a wider/deeper toebox, bunion splints to prevent rubbing in shoes, padding and orthotics.
