Plantar warts are a challenge for many podiatry and chiropody clinics. Plantar warts can sometimes be very resistant to treatment as they avoid involving the immune system and most times are directly related to the strength of the immune system. People with compromised immune systems and children are more susceptible to warts. The virus is contained within the lesion, 2 to 3 mm below the skin surface which is why they escape detection of the immune system and sometimes can persist for many years. Many agents have been used to treat warts including: topical agents, cryotherapy, immune modulators, electocautery, lasers and excision.

There is now a new option known as: Swift Portable Microwave Device which is a new device since January 2019 invented by Scotlands Emblation Ltd. This treatment works by using a 7 mm applicator to apply 8-10W (watts) of microwave energy to the affected area. The microwaves penetrate the tissues to a predetermined depth of 3.2 mm heating cells to between 109-114 degrees F This heat can cause proteins inside the virus to be released and the patients immune system then becomes aware of the virus. Each application lasts 2 seconds. A typical treatment sessions involves five 2 second applications at intervals of one second. Patients show complete remission after 3-4 sessions spaced four weeks apart to align with the patient's immune cycle.
