PODIATRIST DISCUSSES PLANTAR FASCIITIS

According to podiatrist James Crilley, DPM, "Pain in the heel with the first step in the morning and after resting the foot for a period of time is the hallmark symptom of plantar fasciitis. This is because the fascia is tight after rest, which causes instant inflammatory pain where it inserts into the heel bone when you stand and the fascia pulls to do its job. The fascia will stretch and loosen as you walk, which alleviates the initial pain."

"Treatment also includes supporting the fascia with proper shoes and aggressive stretching exercises to loosen the fascia. This is usually enough to alleviate the symptoms. However, in some cases, the symptoms linger and more involved treatment is necessary. This can include splints or physical therapy. On rare occasions, a minimally invasive surgical procedure to loosen the fascia might be necessary," says Dr. Crilley.
