TAILOR'S BUNIONS - WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW TO TREAT THEM

Tailors bunions, also called a bunionette, is an enlargement or outward shift of the fifth metatarsal. Tailors bunions can cause discomfort as it can be painful or cause a blister when its being rubbed in tight footwear.

Tailors bunions can develop through improper footwear, improper foot structure (high arched foot or flat foot), ligamentous laxity, tight calf muscles and in many other situations.

Treatment for tailors bunions include: better footwear including wider and deeper toe boxes, silicone toe props which can shield the area from being rubbed in tight footwear and even using NSAIDs and ice to relieve the area and pain. If the reason for the bunionette formation is due to tight calf muscles, stretches can be taught to help stretch the calf muscles.

Some ways to prevent tailors bunions from forming are to wear stable footwear with a flexible and wide toe box. Never wear tight fitting footwear or narrow footwear as this can exacerbate the bunion/bunionette.
