RISK OF ELEPHANTIASIS STILL OCCURS IN CAMEROON AND ETHIOPIA

Podoconiosis, a non-filarial disease, causes a form of elephantiasis - massive swelling of the legs which is known as a tropical disease. Individuals in developing countries who often walk barefoot are subject to acquiring this disease especially those in contact with red volcanic clay soil. This disease can cause massive swelling of the legs, disfigurement and lead to disabilities. Currently, the disease has been reported to be present in 32 countries with over 4 million cases worldwide.

Elephantiasis often leads to lymphedema in which the lymphatic system of individuals does not work appropriately, in the case of podoconiosis it is due to exposure to irritant soils. In some cases, elephantiasis can occur due to bacteria, viruses or a blockage in the lymphatic system as well.

Some ways to control and prevent this from occurring are the use of regular footwear, foot hygiene (washing of the feet, wound care), compression, elevation of the legs and floor coverings.
