DOWNTOWN TORONTO CHIROPODIST AND FOOT SPECIALIST DISCUSSES BREAKING IN SHOES

The time it takes to break in shoes varies with the construction material, the type of shoe, the purpose it is being used for and who is breaking them in (weight, age, fitness level and whether there are any predisposing factors such as foot fungus or diabetes).  If the shoes are made of leather, the type of leather will affect the break in.  Calfskin, which is a soft, supple leather tends to conform to the shape of the foot and breaks in faster and easier.  Full-grain or top grain leather is usually stiffer and breaks in more slowly.  Also if the person has any genetic deficiencies such as bunions or fallen arches (pes planus) this can affect the break in period.  Expensive shoes tend to have thinner leather and strech more easily as you wear them.

You should always flex the leather or any other material in your fingers to see the stiffness.  There are many specialty shoe stores associated with pethorists which can help you purchase the proper shoe for the right occasion.  Remember, some shoes should or will never be broken in such as high pumps which should never really be worn.
