ANKLE SPRAINS ARE THE MOST COMMON ATHLETIC INJURY

RAMPING UP TOO QUICKLY IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS WE SEE PATIENTS WITH FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES. ANKLE SPRAINS ARE THE MOST COMMON ATHLETIC CINJURY. THE FIRST SIGNS OF AN ANKLE SPRAIN ARE SEVERE PAIN AND INABILITY TO BEAR WEIGHT. SPRAINS ARE OFTEN ACCOMPANIED BY SWELLING, TENDERNESS, BRUISING, PAIN, SKIN DISCOLOURATION, AND/OR STIFFNESS. BECAUSE ANKLE SPRAINS CAN HAVE LONG-TERM IMPLICATIONS, IT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO SEE A PODIATRIST FOR EVALUATION AND TREATMENT. DEPENDING ON THE SEVERITY OF THE SPRAIN, WE MAY IMMOBILIZE IT WITH A BOOT OR ANKLE BRACE. BUT TREATMENT USUALLY FOCUSES ON GETTING THE PATIENT MOVING AGAIN AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. RESEARCH SHOWS THE NUMBER-ONE THING THAT WILL PREVENT LONG-TERM OR CHRONIC ISSUES IS PHYSICAL THERAPY."
