Colorado Citizen Combats Plantar Fasciitis

heel painAt first, Colorado fitness instructor and graphic designer Tammy Moore thought her shoes were the source of her heel pain. But after a while the pain became so intense that sometimes it was difficult for her to even stand up.

“When I’d wake up and take a step, it felt like the arches were cramped,” Moore said. “I would have this whole process of waking my feet up in the morning.” She decided to visit a doctor, who identified her condition as plantar fasciitis.

Moore spent upward of $1000 on physical therapy, new shoes, and insoles. She found that stretching her feet regularly did a lot to make her heel feel better. It ended up being more than a year before her plantar fasciitis fully subsided. “At the first signs, if you think you have it, start (treatments),” she said. “If I felt it coming back, I think I’d do all these things.”

Plantar fasciitis is very painful, but can usually be treated with a wide variety of options. For help with your heel pain, call chiropodist Marz Hardy of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics. Marz Hardy will let you know if you have plantar fasciitis or not and recommend an appropriate treatment.

The Condition Known as Plantar Fasciitis

An inflammation of the connective tissues on the bottom of the foot, Plantar Fasciitis can cause a great deal of pain in the arch and heel of the foot.

Treatments That Can Help Plantar Fasciitis

  • Shockwave Therapy- works by sending sound waves to the sites where pain is being experienced. Commonly used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis, shockwave therapy usually requires multiple sessions
  • Ultrasound-guided technique with steroid injections into the plantar fascia. This is from a relatively smaller new study but shown to be effective in most cases treated
  • Conservative Measures- ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices, physical therapy and/or anti-inflammatory medication

What Can Cause Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Lack of adequate footwear
  • Bad foot support
  • Overpronation
