Deaths from the bite of a brown recluse spider are rare, but it's still important to seek immediate medical treatment for any type of spider bite, said Dr. Robert Duggan, a podiatric specialist who practices at Orlando Regional Medical Center and Dr. P. Phillips Hospital. The brown recluse is most commonly found in certain Southern states, portions of the Midwest, and as far west as Oklahoma."The anxiety increases pretty quickly when you see spiders like that," he said. "When it's bad, and that patient is reactive to the venom …. It's very painful."

Duggan said that, although he hasn't seen an increasing problem with the venomous recluse spiders, which have six eyes — unlike most spiders, which have eight — he has treated several patients each year because one of the most common bite areas is the foot or leg.
